Ogni anno,quasi per un antico mistero, la processione si ripete. E’ il Corpus Domini e il sole riprende a baciare la terra molisana. In questo fiorire di riti dedicati alla primavera inoltrata e incentrati sui carri sacri, a Campobasso, fin dal 1700, la Processione dei Misteri continua ad attrarre e stupìre tutti. Una storia che affonda le sue radici nel medioevo, quando le confraternite, in questo borgo antico, lottavano per assumere il predominio. E di particolare prestigio era il primeggiare alle processioni. Forse anche per questo due confraternite nemiche si sfidavano senza tregua per costruire ‘ingegni’  che attraessero e dessero il senso del potere nelle processioni e, in particolar modo, dopo il concilio di Trento, in quella del Corpus Domini. Momenti di festa in quella che diventerà la cittadina capoluogo, ma anche motivo per ostentare la propria potenza… Un antico accordo del 1587 ricorda quanto importanti fossero gli ingegni o misteri della religione cristiana.  Dopo questa pace, siglata in quell’anno, lentamente le confraternite si vennero assestando, fino al 1750 circa quando, dopo l’eversione feudale, Campobasso commissionò ad uno scultore locale di ‘fissare’ questi ingegni, quadri viventi rappresentanti misteri della religione cristiana, in 24 ingegni che sfilassero ogni anno. Paolo Saverio di Zinno, noto nella regione per la sua statuaria, mise al lavoro i fabbri campobassani e dopo un alacre lavoro, nella fucina dell’ingegno, nacquero i misteri. Tra lo stupore di tutti, i Misteri iniziarono il collaudo  ma, purtroppo, secondo la tradizione ne sopravvissero solo diciotto e poi dodici: quelli che,ancora oggi, a distanza di trecento anni, vediamo puntualmente sfilare la domenica del Corpus Domini. E’ un fiume di gente che si accalca per ammirare la maestria della statuaria vivente del Di Zinno. Nascosti tra i drappeggi barocchi, svettano verso il cielo angeli e madonne ma anche diavoli e figure bibliche, in un ripercorrere la storia della salvezza. Una manifestazione che vede la sua preparazione per un anno intero. Figuranti, portatori, bande musicali, volontari per la logistica, un piccolo esercito che continua ad amare questa tradizione e la mantiene viva. Il Comune di Campobasso , da alcuni anni, organizza un festival dei Misteri, con manifestazioni di cultura, spettacolo, folklore e arte, proprio come un tempo, quando, in occasione della festa, venivano da tutte le parti del Molise, dell’Abruzzo e della Puglia per vivere insieme la processione dei Misteri. Dopo il 1959 i misteri sono diventati tredici. I fratelli Tucci,artigiani locali, su disegni del Di Zinno, ricostruirono il Sacro cuore. Chi decide di trascorrere la festa del Corpus Domini a Campobasso trova, tra piatti dal sapore genuino e colori delle bancarelle,l’ospitalità di angeli e diavoli  che sorridono allegramente e che continuano a dimostrare che l’amore per le tradizioni esiste…la processione dei misteri ne è un esempio vivente.

The Mysteries  of Campobasso

Every year, almost due to a mystery, the process start all over again. It's the Corpus Domini and the sun starts again to kiss the land of Molise. Through that blossoming of rites dedicated to the already began spring and concerned about sacred wagons, in Campobasso, since 1700, the mystery procession keeps fascinating everyone. A story which roots are deep caved into the middle ages, when the brotherhood, in that ancient town, used to fight to take over the control,  and a particular power was given to those who did the best processions. Maybe that's also why two enemies brotherhoods used to fight without any rule and any break to make "engines" able to seek people and give meaning to the processions all over the world and particularly after the council of Trento, within the Corpus Domini's one. Merrymakings in that town destined to become the local chief town, but even a reason to flag their own power... an ancient dealing of the 1587 reminds  how important were the wits and the mysteries of the of the Christianity. After that dealing, signed that year,  brotherhoods slowly started to quiet down, until 1750 when, after feudal eversion, Campobasso commissioned to a local sculptor to "pin" those wits, living paintings representing mysteries of the Christianity, with 24 wits showing every year. Paolo Saverio di Zinno, known in the region due to his statuary, made locksmiths from Campobasso and after a really hard work, in the forge property, mysteries were born.

Through the amazement of everyone, mysteries started to be tried but sadly, according to the tradition, just eighteen of them survived, then only twelve: the one which, still today, after three hundred years, still see showing up on the Corpus Domini sunday. A flow of people arguing with each other to see the majesty of the living statuary of Di Zinno. Hidden under baroque drapery, a lot of Holy Maries and Angels along with devils and biblical figures decorate the sky, while following the way of redemption. A preparation which lasts a whole year. Contained, bearers, music bands and volunteers for logistics, a little army keeps loving that tradition and keep it alive. The city hall of Campobasso has been holding that festival of mysteries, with manifestations of arts, folklore, culture and entertaining, just like the old times, when in occasion of the festival, people came from all over the Molise, Abruzzo and Puglia in order to see the together the mysteries. After 1959 mysteries became thirteen. The Tucci brothers, local artisans, based on Zinno's drawings, rebuilt the Holy Heart. Who decides to spend the Corpus Domini holyday in Campobasso finds, through truly flavor plates and colorful markets, the hospitality of angels and demons which smile happily at you and keep showing the love which incurs through traditions...
