L'AQUILA - Negli anni del recente passato era una rievocazione, per quanto dolorosa, di uno “spicchio” di storia locale. Ci riferiamo al terremoto della Candelora del 1703 che, con il suo devastante fragore, alle 12 di quel giorno, spense la “luce” che evocava la festa della presentazione di Gesù al Tempio. Erano tantissime quelle fiammelle delle candele accese in ogni chiesa aquilana. In un sol crollo, quello della chiesa di San Domenico, morirono 300 fedeli e si spense con essi la “luce di Maria”. Oggi quel luttuoso avvenimento, da cui derivò la distruzione della città medioevale fin lì giunta, per il numero dei morti sembra essere parte integrante e sentita della tragedia delle 3,32 del 6 aprile 2009, per effetto del distruttivo movimento tellurico che ha polverizzato la “città nova” del Settecento nella quale gli aquilani hanno vissuto per 310 anni e, giustamente, vogliono tornare a vivere.

Così come caparbiamente fecero i superstiti del terremoto del 1703, i quali si diedero una nuova città “poggiandola” sulle pietre del Tre-quattrocento, dopo aver chiamato le maestranze lombarde che non risulta avessero “riso” per gli affari, contrariamente a quanto hanno fatto, dopo il recente sisma, alcuni personaggi del terzo millennio tristemente noti alle cronache del mondo. Che accadde allora? Ce lo riferisce, fra i tanti altri, Anton Ludovic Antinori:

<…rovinò buona parte della città, e fu veduto in più luoghi aprirsi la terra…la terra continuamente esalava puzzolenti vapori, l’acqua nei pozzi cresceva e gorgogliava, gli acquedotti della città rimasero infranti, e per 22 ore la terra si sentì muovere…Rimasero sepolti sotto le pietre> seimila persone, fra interno ed esterno alle mura, su un totale di 15 mila abitanti circa.

Va detto che il comprensorio aquilano l’anno precedente (1702) era stato devastato da inondazioni, smottamenti, piogge, straripamento dell’Aterno (che aveva la sua abbondante acqua, oggi riversata entro il lago di Campotosto), e da ultimo da buone nevicate. Sembrava bastevole, come si diceva,  per espiare “i molti peccati” che si supponeva avessero commesso soprattutto le classi agiate e dei signori. La povera gente, tantissima in verità, non era neanche considerata in questo quadro espiatorio. Purtroppo, alle due della notte del 14 gennaio del 1703 l’alta valle dell’Aterno fu colpita da una violentissima scossa tellurica che cancellò Montereale, uccidendo 800 dei suoi 900 abitanti (15 morti si ebbero ad Accumuli e 25 a Leonessa). Fu l’inizio della forza distruttiva che si abbatté nei giorni successivi lungo la stessa vallata,  fino a giungere al culmine il 2 febbraio con la profonda distruzione della città e dei luoghi, o meglio dei castelli circonvicini, Paganica compresa.

Da cui derivò lo sconvolgimento dell’ordine fisico e morale mai più compensato, purtroppo ripresentatosi tal quale 310 anni dopo con la grande e dolorosa diaspora imposta agli aquilani di oggi. Con essa è stato “rubato il futuro” a tutti i cittadini, che però caparbiamente – come i loro antenati – pur tra i tanti ostacoli ideologici d’ogni colore, vanno riprendendosi perché ai giovani va lasciata la “secolare anima aquilana” fatta di cultura, di umanità ed anche di fede per chi crede.

During a recent re-enactment , Aquila , however painful , in reference to the earthquake of 1703 known as CANDELORA , with its devasting furore , at noon on that day , blew out the "lights" that evoked the feast of Jesus in the temple . Throughout all the churches of Aquila the candle flames we're vastly alight . In one collapse , the Church of San Domenico , 300 worshippers died and the flame of our lady , "light of Maria " also went out .
Today , that mournful event , from which came the destruction of the city , was felt again at 3.32 of April 6th , 2009 , as a result of that devasting earthquake that polverized the city in the 18th century , inhabitants lived for 310 years and , rightly so , want to return to live in Aquila .
 
As the survivors of the earthquake of 1703 , they started the new Aquila "by calling on the Lombard craftsmen ,  and resting on the three-four hundred stones , built
some historical characters of the 3rd millennium to which have been lost in the last quake .
What occurred after , as stated by Anton Ludovico Antinori : ... the city was much ruined , and was seen in more places that the ground/earth opened up ... the earth  continually spurted out smelly fiumes , the water in the wells rose and gurgled, the aquaducts of the city were destroyed , and for 22 hours the earth moved ... and buried beneath the stones , six thousand people lie , between interior and exterior walls , out of approximately 15 thousand inhabitants .
 It must be said that the region of Aquila the previous year (1702) had been devasted by floods , landslides , and snowfalls . This seemed sufficient , as they said ,
to atone their many sins that supposedly had been committed mainly by the upper classes . The poor , weren't even considered in its framework .
Unfortunately , at 2 on the night of 14th January 1703 , the upper Aterno Valley was hit by a violent earthquake that erased Montereale , killing 800 of its
900 inhabitants ( also killing 15 in Accumuli and 25 in Leonessa ) . This was the start of the destructive forces that followed in the days after the earthquake,
until reaching its climax on February 2nd with the profound destruction of towns , including Paganica .
 
The physical and moral upheaval occurred from this , to which unfortunately has reoccurred 310 years later to the present day residents of Aquila .
Hence , the future of the AQUILANI has been stolen , but stubbornly , as their ancestors , even with its many ideological obstacles , the young of today
believe in leaving the secular culture behind , and that humanity will prevail for who has faith and belief .
