Una giornata diversa, particolare, avvolta nel silenzio e alla scoperta di un luogo che non immaginavo. Un luogo, mèta di una pasquetta per pochi, anzi pochissimi che seduti sulla scalinata hanno consumato un panino e bevuto un bicchiere di vino forse in onore dei soldati senza nome.

Il monumento è posto alla sommità del monte Zurrone ed è dedicato ai 145.000 Caduti in tutti i teatri del secondo conflitto mondiale, ai quali non fu possibile dare degna sepoltura, una lapide, una croce. Roccaraso era uno dei tanti paesi e città italiane “bruciati” dalla guerra. Ed arrivando in questo centro montano se il turista guarda in alto verso le montagne può scorgere “Monte Zurrone”, un picco dominante panoramico, che fu posto d’osservazione per i tiri di artiglieria e su di esso  il “Monumento ai Caduti senza Croce”, un sacrario di ossa senza nomi, voluto dal tenace  Col. Vincenzo Palmieri, combattente egli stesso e che aveva avuto nella propria famiglia  un fratello ufficiale morto in Jugoslavia ed un cugino disperso in Russia. E a ricordo dei propri cari ma anche di tutti i giovani soldati  decise di impegnarsi per costruire sui nostri monti un Sacrario che li ricordasse alle future generazioni.

La costruzione del Monumento venne iniziata nel 1956 con offerte di Enti, Forze Armate, Associazioni combattentistiche di ogni parte d’Italia, Personalità, Artigiani. Offerte in dono di manufatti non mancarono da molte Città d’Italia colpite duramente dalla guerra.

Il 1 settembre 1961 dalla storica Basilica di Santa Croce di Firenze partì, diretta al nostro Sacrario, l’urna bronzea che conteneva i Ruolini di un primo gruppo di 12.500 Ufficiali, Sottufficiali e Soldati, tutti caduti senza croce. Manciate di terra, di sabbia e di mare delle località in cui i nostri valorosi soldati hanno combattuto e spento la propria esistenza, si conservano nel Sacrario. Ogni anno, l’ultima domenica di giugno si svolge su Monte Zurrone la “Giornata del Ricordo”, affinchè il ricordo dei caduti per la Patria, il loro sacrificio sia la speranza di un futuro di pace.

A different day, special , shrouded in silence and the discovery of a place that I never imagined . A place, a destination for Easter Monday for a few, very few indeed who sat on the steps they have eaten a sandwich and drank a  glass of wine , perhaps in honor of the soldiers without a name.

The monument is located at the top of the mount Zurrone  and is dedicated  to the 145.000 fallen in all theaters of World War II , which was not possible to give a decent burial , a tombstone,a cross.  Roccaraso was one of many Italian towns and cities " burned " by the war. And coming up in this mountain town where the tourist looks up at the mountains may see " Monte Zurrone ," a dominant peak panorama , which was observation post  for artillery fire , and on it the " Monument to the Fallen without the Cross”, a shrine of bones without names , built by Col. Vincenzo  Palmieri tenacious fighter himself, and that he had had in his family a brother officer died in Yugoslavia and a cousin missing in Russia.                                                  
And in memory of their loved ones but also of all the young soldiers decided  to commit to building on our mountains a Shrine remember them for future generations. The construction of the monument began in 1956, offers organizations, armed  forces , veterans' associations from all over Italy , personality, artisans .  Offers a gift of
artifacts were not lacking from many cities of Italy hit hard by the war.

On September 1, 1961 by the historic Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence  departed, direct to our Shrine , the bronze urn that contained the route plans  of an initial group of 12,500 officers , NCOs and soldiers , all fallen without  the cross.  Handfuls of earth, sand and sea of the places where our brave soldiers who fought on and off its own existence , are kept in the Shrine. Every year on the  last Sunday in June is held on Mount Zurrone the "Day of Remembrance " for the  memory of those who died for their country , their sacrifice is the hope of a  peaceful future .
