Mai definizione fu più appropriata per descrivere la vita d Mario Lanza,che nella sua pur breve esistenza, riuscì nell’impresa di unire idealmente Vecchio e Nuovo Continente nell’ascolto della sua voce. Le sue origini,indissolubilmente molisane da un lato ( padre  di Filignano - Isernia) nonché abruzzesi dall’altro (madre di Tocco da Casauria - Pescara) si riflessero ineluttabilmente anche sul suo carattere e nella sua tempra artistica.

La  perseveranza (tipica dell’Abruzzo ‘forte e gentile’) della madre, infatti, intuite le enormi potenzialità, lo induce a studiare con i migliori maestri dell’epoca: compreso Enrico Rosati, già insegnante nientemeno che di Beniamino Gigli. Talento purissimo e precocissimo, portò in giro per il mondo la sua voce flautata,che sin dalla giovinezza fu il suo marchio di fabbrica: consentendogli di spaziare dalle arie liriche ai canti popolari, il suo “range” vocale lo rese tra i massimi esponenti del bel canto dell’epoca, pur non dedicandosi completamente alla carriera operistica, stante l’enorme appeal da lui esercitato sulle masse.

Maggiormente attivo in campo cinematografico, raggiunse il suo picco assoluto nel 1951 con  Il Grande Caruso, in cui riveste i panni del leggendario tenore napoletano interpretandone a modo suo le principali romanze: il successo che ne conseguì fu a dir poco straordinario, vendendo circa 1 milione di copie della raccolta dei brani in esso interpretati. Definito all’epoca “tenore brillante”, in senso inspiegabilmente riduttivo dai critici d’arte, ben presto il nostro eroe spazzò via tutti i pregiudizi al riguardo, con i migliori teatri a disputarsi le sue prestazioni: memorabile resta il  The Mario Lanza Show, che nello stesso 1951 lo vede protagonista sulle principali emittenti statunitensi di una trasmissione antesignana degli odierni talk shows. In detto programma, il tenore è protagonista assoluto nell’intrattenere l’audience con le sue esibizioni canore: talmente gradite al grande pubblico da non poterne consentire la trasmissione diretta, stante l’oceanico e straripante entusiasmo degli spettatori. Gravato da un contratto capestro con la casa cinematografica MGM, che lo vincolava in esclusiva a produrre solo per essa, riuscirà a liberarsene solo nel 1956, legandosi in seguito con la Warner Bros. Per cui interpreterà il film Serenata, accanto a due mostri sacri del grande schermo quali Joan Fontaine e Vincent Price.

La sua passione per la lirica resta sempre ineluttabile, desideroso come non mai di calcare i palcoscenici, nonché di ripercorrere le sue origini familiari, nel 1957 si imbarca per l’Italia nella speranza di ottenere finalmente il riconoscimento del suo talento lirico. Riesce, per il momento, a girare l’anno successivo Arrivederci Roma al fianco di Marisa Allasio  e Renato  Rascel, incidendo per l’occasione il celebre brano che dà vita alla pellicola. Ma il momento più toccante e colmo di significato per il tenore è la storica visita che nel settembre del 1958 lo porta con la sua famiglia a visitare il paese d’origine paterno.

Immortalato in una celebre ripresa video dell’epoca, (filmato), l’arrivo di Lanza cementa per sempre il legame tra egli e le sue radici: accolto dalle massime autorità del paese, il grande tenore viene omaggiato  di una targa a ricordo imperituro ed una statua che lo raffigura. Un banchetto in suo onore e l’arrivo di una banda musicale dalla cittadina di Roccasecca furono, tra gli altri, i momenti degni di menzione e probabilmente tra i più felici della vita del tenore,che in questa occasione ritrovava i legami originari della sua giovinezza.

Proprio nel momento in cui il mondo del teatro pare rendergli finalmente giustizia, con la proposta di alcune scritturazioni alla Scala ed al San Carlo, la sorte avversa decide di presentare il conto all’artista. Reduce già da un attacco cardiaco nei mesi precedenti, un ennesimo malore lo obbliga al ricovero presso Villa Giulia a Roma, dove si spegne a soli 38 anni il 7 ottobre 1959. Lascia sgomenta la moglie Betty, che gli sopravviverà solo pochi mesi, spegnendosi di crepacuore, ed i figli Elissa, Marc, Colleen e Damon, questi ultimi segnati negli anni a venire da funesti eventi personali. Scompariva così una delle voci più nobili del secolo passato: ma, pur nell’arco di una vita relativamente breve, il suo ricordo imperituro resta attraverso i decenni, con innumerevoli iniziative in sua memoria.

Oltre alla collaborazione ed agli scambi culturali instauratisi tra Filignano e la  Mario Lanza Foundation di Filadelfia, paese natio del tenore, ( Mario Lanza), ci piace segnalare senza dubbio l’ormai celebre Mario Lanza Festival: giunto alla quattrordicesima edizione, da diversi anni  vede protagonista nei mesi estivi la cittadina di Filignano, location storica di questa kermesse che negli anni ha visto avvicendarsi voci celebri come Cecilia Gasdia, Katia Ricciarelli, Nicola Martinucci, ed altre in seguito alla ribalta. Un motivo in più per visitare uno dei paesi più rappresentativi dell’intero circondario, essendo facilmente raggiungibile ed essendo ideale spartiacque della cultura abruzzo-molisana, mirabilmente condensata nella vita di uno dei massimi tenori del Novecento, cui solo la morte impedì di raggiungere vette elevatissime. Una pubblicazione che ci piace menzionare e che ben racchiude l’opera e la vita di Lanza è di certo quella di Armando Cesari: Mario Lanza, An American Tragedy.

The memorable remains the Mario Lanza Show, in the same 1951, the main protagonist of U.S. issuers transmission forerunner of today's talk shows .
In this program, the content is the protagonist in entertaining the audience with his singing performances : so you like the general public not to be able to allow the direct transmission , in view of the ocean and overflowing enthusiasm of the spectators.
Burdened with a halter contract with the studio MGM , which bound him to produce exclusive only for it, will be able to get rid of it in 1956 , as a result of binding with Warner Bros.
