E' ispirata alla figura di San Martino  di Tours vescovo e taumaturgo, nato in Francia quando questa era ancora sotto l’influsso pagano dei Celti, che celebravano l’inizio del nuovo anno a novembre. Martino aveva della sua missione di “pastore” un concetto assai diverso da molti vescovi del tempo, uomini spesso di abitudini cittadine e quindi poco conoscitori della campagna e dei suoi abitanti. Uomo di preghiera e di azione,  percorreva personalmente i distretti abitati dai servi agricoltori, dedicando particolare attenzione all'evangelizzazione delle campagne. E’ venerato come santo dalla Chiesa Cattolica, ed è il primo santo non martire ricordato dalla liturgia.

Ma veniamo a quelle che sono le tradizioni popolari che hanno trasformato San Martino , venerato l'11 novembre, nel “santo dei cornuti”. Partiamo dalla mitologia latino-romana più arcaica, dagli amori adulterini di Marte (di cui Martino è il diminutivo), Dio della guerra, e Venere, Dea dell’amore, che sorpresi da Vulcano, Dio del fuoco e marito della Dea della bellezza, furono da lui stesso rinchiusi in una rete di ferro per mostrarli agli Dei e averli quindi testimoni del torto subito. Ma gli Dei dell’Olimpo lo sbeffeggiarono e lo derisero, così la delusione di Vulcano fu ancora più atroce; forse proprio in quella vicenda va collocata l’origine di “un detto” che dura da secoli: “cornuto e mazziato”.

I motivi per cui san Martino sia divenuto patrono dei cornuti sono diversi; alcuni studiosi ritengono che questa tradizione abbia avuto origine dal fatto che in questo giorno si svolgevano feste e fiere aventi come oggetto proprio bestiami con corna; anche la data espressa numericamente (11 11) sembra simboleggiare le corna. Le corna, però, nell'antichità erano un simbolo regale, adornavano la fronte degli dei, simboleggiavano potenza, luce (nella tradizione giudeo-cristiana) mentre il “corno dell’abbondanza” nella tradizione greco-romana era simbolo di fecondità e felicità. I copri capi a forma di corna, come le corone medievali o le mitre di vescovi, indicavano il potere di chi li portava. Le corna richiamano alla mente, però, anche il pericolo delle bestie selvagge e il toro che incorna. Tutto ciò suggerisce l'alterità misteriosa e spaventosa degli animali e la loro associazione non solo con  la fertilità ma anche con la morte. Da tanta importanza, nella tradizione popolare le corna sono decadute a indicare la vittima del tradimento coniugale.

In quasi tutto l'Abruzzo, il giorno di san Martino, vengono organizzate processioni fragorose per scovare i cosiddetti cornuti, come a Pescasseroli (Aq), a San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore (Pe). La manifestazione rievocherebbe  l' inganno dell' impudica sorella di San Martino che, eludendo la sorveglianza del fratello, riuscì a dar sfogo alle sue voglie. A San Valentino il 10 e l'11 novembre si svolge tutt’oggi la tradizionale processione dei cornuti. Più di 150 anni fa nella notte del 10  novembre, per le vie del paese, mentre tutti dormivano, gruppi di persone collocavano dei lumini accesi davanti alle case di quelli che erano ritenuti cornuti. Chi la mattina seguente trovava il lumino acceso scopriva di essere stato tradito dalla moglie e, prendendo atto del proprio status, doveva uscire con giacca e cappello al contrario. Solitamente, si diceva che a sistemare i lumini erano gli uomini che erano stati protagonisti dei tradimenti. Oggi la manifestazione  è caratterizzata da una processione nel corso della quale una riproduzione  dell'attributo sessuale maschile, portata in corteo velata, viene affidata dall' ultimo degli sposati dell'anno precedente all' ultimo degli sposati dell'anno in corso. Prima di essere consegnata il ‘simbolo’ viene scoperto e mostrato alla gente. Il nuovo detentore porta poi il simulacro falliforme in giro per il paese accompagnato da una folla di gente. In passato la manifestazione  ha generato momenti di vera tensione quando i partecipanti si fermavano dinanzi alle case dei presunti cornuti indirizzando motti salaci e  motivi pungenti nei loro confronti. . Oggi il corteo burlesco ha assunto connotati folkloristici e si conclude con cibo, balli, canti e tanto vino novello…il vino ingannatore!                            

      Feast of the horned    - St. Martin - November 11

Inspired by the figure of St. Martin of Tours, bishop and miracle worker , born in France when it was still under the influence of the pagan Celts, who celebrated the beginning of the new year in November . Martin had his mission of "pastor" a very different concept from many bishops of the time, men often of urban existence and therefore not very knowledgeable of the countryside and its inhabitants :a man of prayer and action, personally walked the districts inhabited by the servants farmers, paying particular attention to the evangelization of the countryside. And ' venerated as a saint by the Catholic Church , and is the first non-martyr saint remembered by the liturgy.
But let those who are the folk traditions that have transformed St. Martin , venerated on 11 November , in the " holy of bastards ." We start from the most archaic Roman mythology Latin , from adulterous loves of Mars (of which Martin is the diminutive ) , god of war , and Venus, goddess of love, which surprised by Vulcan , god of fire and husband of the goddess of beauty, were by himself locked up in an iron net to show them to the gods and then have them witnessed the wrongs they have suffered . But the Olympians mocked him , so the disappointment of Vulcan was even more atrocious , perhaps in the affair should be placed the origin of " a saying " that lasts for centuries : " horned” and “mazziato ."
The reasons why St. Martin has become the patron of cuckolds are different, some scholars believe that this tradition to have originated from the fact that on this day were held festivals and fairs which have as their object cattle with horns , even the date expressed numerically (11 11 ) seems to symbolize the horns. The horns , however, in ancient times were a royal symbol , adorned the front of the gods, symbolized power , light ( in the Jude-Christian tradition ), while the " horn of plenty " in the greek-roman tradition was a symbol of fertility and happiness. The cover heads in the shape of horns, like medieval crowns or mitres of bishops, showed the power of the wearer . The horns are reminiscent of , though, is also the danger of wild beasts and the bull that gored . All this suggests the otherness mysterious and frightening the animals and their association not only with fertility but also with death. Since so much importance in the folk tradition horns were forfeited to indicate the victim of marital betrayal.
In almost all of Abruzzi , the day of St. Martin , thunderous processions are organized to hunt down the so-called horned , as in Pescasseroli (Aq ) , in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore (Pe) . The event will be reminiscent of the ' deception of ' lewd sister of St. Martin , eluding his brother , was able to give vent to his cravings. On Valentine's Day on 10 and 11 November there is still the traditional procession of the horned . More than 150 years ago on the night of 10 November, the streets of the country, while everyone was asleep , groups of people put of lit candles in front of houses of those who were believed to be horned. About the next morning was the lighted lamp discovered that he was betrayed by his wife and , taking note of his status , he had to go out with jacket and hat backward : usually, it was said that to arrange the candles were the men who were the protagonists of betrayal. Today the event is characterized by a procession during which a male sexual reproduction of the attribute , brought in procession veiled , is entrusted by ' last of the previous year married to' last of the married this year:before being delivered to the ' symbol ' is discovered and shown to people.  The new holder then brings the statue peculiarly around the country accompanied by a crowd of people: in the past, the event has generated moments of real tension when the participants stopped before the house of the alleged horned addressing salacious jokes and stinging reasons against them. Today, the parade took on a burlesque folk and ends with food, dancing, singing and lots of new wine ... wine deceiver !
