Bucchianico ha dato i natali, nel lontano 1550, a San Camillo de Lellis e in città sorge un santuario dedicato al Santo, meta di pellegrinaggio in ogni periodo dell’anno. Camillo stesso partecipò alla costruzione della chiesa, in qualità di manovale, contribuendo così ad edificare quello che solo molto tempo dopo sarebbe divenuto il suo santuario. All’interno dell’edificio sacro, in pieno centro storico, sono conservate alcune reliquie del Santo, frammenti di ossa e le bende con le quali San Camillo medicava le sue piaghe e ferite. Nella cripta, realizzata nel 1959, è ospitato il simulacro di San Camillo, una fedele ricostruzione realizzata mediante un calco in cera del vero volto del Santo. Il reliquiario è impreziosito da un’ampollina contenente il sangue raggrumato di San Camillo e alcuni piccoli frammenti del muscolo cardiaco. Proprio accanto alla cripta è possibile visitare una mostra permanente dedicata alla vita del Santo di Bucchianico: reliquie, bende di lino usate per medicare le piaghe, vestiti, ma anche lettere autografe e documenti di alto valore storico. Poco distante dal centro abitato, lungo le sponde del fiume Foro, sorge un altro luogo sacro collegato alla devozione di San Camillo de Lellis, la cappellina detta ‘La Calcara’. In origine era una fornace, quella stessa dove il Santo fece cuocere i mattoni che sarebbero stati utilizzati per la costruzione del Santuario.

Place of pilgrimage

Bucchianico was born, back in 1550, at San Camillo de Lellis, and the city stands a shrine dedicated to the Holy pilgrimage destination throughout the year. Camillo himself attended to the construction of the church, as a laborer, helping to build what only much later would become his sanctuary. Within the sacred building in the historic center, are preserved some relics of the saint, bone fragments and the bandages with which San Camillo medicava his sores and wounds. The crypt, built in 1959, houses the statue of St. Camillus, a faithful reconstruction built using a wax cast of the true face of the saint. The reliquary is embellished with a phial containing the blood clotted San Camillo and some small fragments of heart muscle. Right next to the crypt you can visit a permanent exhibition on the life of the Holy Bucchianico: relics, linen bandages used to heal the wounds, clothing and also autograph letters and documents of high historical value. Not far from the town, along the banks of the River Forum, there is another holy place connected to the devotion of St. Camillus de Lellis, the chapel called 'The Calcara'. Originally it was a furnace, where the saint had the same cook the bricks that were used for the construction of the Sanctuary.
