L’Abruzzo ha assunto nei secoli uno storico ruolo quale collegamento e passaggio obbligato tra le regioni del centro e del sud Italia. La vicinanza con Roma che è stata fondamentale nel processo di evangelizzazione si conferma oggi come snodo turistico tra i percorsi nord-sud (traiana-frentana), da Santiago de Compostela alla Terra Santa, ed est-ovest (tiburtina- valeria), da Roma alla Terra Santa; meta ideale questa per un percorso nei tanti volti della spiritualità cristiana. Dalle testimonianze storiche del passaggio dei pellegrini e dei crociati, sulle vie romane e sugli antichi tratturi, si delinea il primo cammino abruzzese della rete europea dei Cammini d’Europa. Un grande circuito turistico internazionale sulle orme dei pellegrini alla ricerca delle radici storiche dell’Europa moderna.

Il Cammino di Tommaso che nasce dalla presenza in Abruzzo delle sacre spoglie dell’Apostolo Tommaso, custodite dal 1258 nella Cattedrale di Ortona, si caratterizza per la spiritualità dei luoghi e dei personaggi che s’incontrano lungo il percorso. Una nuova e suggestiva opportunità di conoscere la regione in un itinerario percorribile in auto ma anche, in alcuni tratti, a piedi o in bicicletta, come da secoli avviene nel Cammino di Santiago, e che si fonda sulla primaria necessità di percepire il valore del luogo, mediante la sosta e la conoscenza, per poi riprendere il cammino.

Il Cammino, che tocca le più importanti eccellenze religiose e culturali della regione, attraverso un magnifico paesaggio, è segnato dal “dubbio”, quello di Tommaso davanti alla resurrezione di Gesù e quello del monaco basiliano che vede trasformarsi l’ostia sacra in carne e il vino in sangue (Miracolo Eucaristico).

Ma il Cammino permette anche di assaporare la profondità della spiritualità ascetica e contemplativa di Celestino V, che in Abruzzo trovò l’ambiente ideale per svilupparla e di farsi avvolgere nei  misteri più grandi della cristianità, come il Volto Santo, immagine non dipinta da mano dell’uomo, e l’Apparizione della Vergine Maria. Si può inoltre percorrere con il Cammino anche una sentita e profonda via della devozione visitando i santuari mariani e quelli dedicati a San Gabriele dell’Addolorata e San Camillo de Lellis. Con il Cammino di Tommaso il viaggio alla scoperta del territorio, diventa un’esperienza unica e irripetibile in cui natura, spiritualità e fede incoraggiano un percorso personale di raccoglimento e riflessione. 

The pathway of the Apostle Thomas

The Abruzzo has assumed in the centuries an historical role which connection and obliged passage between the regions of the center and the south Italy. The vicinity with Rome that has been fundamental in the evangelization process, today is confirmed as tourist hub between the distances north-south (traiana-frentana), from Santiago de Compostela to Terra Santa, and East-West (tiburtina- valeria), from Rome to Terra Santa; ideal goal this for a distance in the many faces of Christian spirituality. From the historical testimonies of the passage of the pilgrims and the crusaders, on the ways roman and the ancient livestock trails, it is delineated first path from Abruzzo of the European net of European Paths. A great international tourist circuit on the tracks of the pilgrims to the search of the historical roots of modern Europe.

The Walk of Thomas  which arises from the presence in Abruzzo of the sacred bare of the apostle Thomas, had guarded since 1258 in the Cathedral of Ortona, it is characterized for the spirituality of the places and the characters that you/they are met along the run. A new and suggestive opportunity to know the region in a practicable itinerary in auto but also, in some lines, afoot or in bicycle, as from centuries it happens in the Walk of Santiago, and that founds him upon the primary necessity to perceive the value of the place, through the standstill and the knowledge, for then to take back the walk.

The Walk, that touches the most important religious and cultural excellences of the region, through a magnificent landscape, it is marked by the "doubt", that of Thomas in front of the resurrection of Jesus and that of the “basiliano”monk  that he sees to turn the sacred wafer into meat and the wine in blood (Eucharistic Miracle).

But the Walk also allows to taste the depth of the ascetic and contemplative spirituality of Celestino V, that found the ideal environment to develop it in Abruzzo and to make itself wind up in the greatest mysteries of the Christianity as the Volto Santo (saint face), image not painted by hand of the man, and the apparition of the Virgo Maria. You can also cross besides with the Walk one felt and deep away of the devotion visiting the “mariani” sanctuaries and those devoted to St. Gabriele of the Our Lady of Sorrows and San Camillo de Lellis.

With the Walk of Thomas the trip to the discovery of the territory, becomes an unique experience and unrepeatable  in which nature, spirituality and faith encourage a personal run of concentration and reflection.
