Cenni storici
Il borgo fortificato è di origine monastica e molte notizie storiche sono riportate nel ‘Chronicon Vulturnense’. Il vecchio nucleo presenta ancora oggi un tessuto urbanistico interessante, il cui elemento caratterizzante è il Palazzo Marchesale dei Battiloro. Presenta le mura a strapiombo sulla roccia che costituiva le fondamenta del castello di Scapoli, poi trasformato in dimora residenziale. In località San Giovanni si incontra l’omonima cappella, con affreschi che raffigurano Cristo racchiuso in una Mandorla, e a pochi metri è possibile visitare anche l’antica fonte. La Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giorgio Martire, ricostruita dopo la seconda guerra mondiale, ha origini molto antiche come testimoniano dal portale laterale che porta iscritta la data del 1326. E’ il paese delle zampogne che ancora costituiscono l’anima dell’artigianato locale. Ogni anno il Festival Internazionale della Zampogna richiama suonatori di zampogne e di strumenti affini da tutta Europa. E’ d’obbligo una visita al Museo dedicato a questo antichissimo strumento musicale, che raccoglie strumenti provenienti da molti paesi.

The fortified town is of monastic origin and much historical information can be found in the 'Chronicon Vulturnense'. The old core still has an interesting urban fabric, whose distinguishing feature is the palace of the marquis Battiloro. Presents the walls overlooking the rock that formed the foundations of the castle of singles, then converted into residential dwelling. In San Giovanni meets the homonymous chapel, with frescoes depicting Christ enclosed in an almond, and a few meters, you can also visit the ancient spring. The Parish of St. George the Martyr Church, rebuilt after the Second World War, has ancient origins, as evidenced by the side door that leads entered the date of 1326. And 'the land of bagpipes which still constitute the soul of the local. Each year the Festival attracts players of bagpipes and related instruments from all over Europe. It 'must visit the museum dedicated to this ancient musical instrument, which collects instruments from many countries.
