Cenni storici

Con i suoi 1421 mt sul livello del mare, è uno dei centri appenninici più alti (il punto più alto è la vetta di Monte Campo a mt 1730) e dal borgo si aprono ampie viste panoramiche sulla Majella e sulle Mainarde. La sua storia è antica: oltre ai rinvenimenti che attestano la presenza dell’uomo preistorico, in particolare la “Tabula Osca”, (una lastra in bronzo con un’epigrafe in lingua osca attualmente esposta al British Museum di Londra) ricollega il territorio di Capracotta alla civilizzazione sannitica, così come i resti di cinture in opera poligonale di Monte Cavallerizzo (mt 1524) e Monte S.Nicola (mt 1517).

Capracotta è importante per il suo clima e per gli sport invernali che vi si praticano. Il suo Sci Club è stato fondato nel 1914 e ha due importanti impianti sciistici: uno per lo sci alpino in località Monte Capraro: l’altro per lo sci di fondo in località Prato Gentile. Grazie alla sua posizione, in inverno è usuale imbattersi in bufere di neve. Facilmente ci si può trovare in strade e piazzette in cui il manto nevoso può superare i due metri, così come in estate è possibile godere del clima fresco sia nel borgo che nei territori circostanti. Il paese è costituito da caratteristiche case in pietra e in cima ad una lunga gradinata si trova la parrocchiale di Maria Assunta in Cielo, settecentesca. La facciata è in pietra, su due ordini è l’interno a tre navate: pregevoli sono la fonte battesimale con preziosi intagli, l’altare della navata centrale, la balaustra di marmo intarsiato, l’organo del ‘700 e un possente campanile. Santa Maria di Loreto, ad 1 km dall’abitato, conserva un gruppo scultoreo di Giacomo Colombo.

Fonte dell’economia locale è stata per secoli la pastorizia e ad essa è legata la sagra che si svolge la prima domenica di agosto a Prato Gentile, detta “della Pezzata”, una ricetta legata alla pastorizia a base di carne di pecora . Ancora oggi sono molto apprezzati i prodotti caseari, frutto di una lunga storia e di tradizioni artigianali. Il suo territorio, soprattutto verso contrada Macchie, è costellato di costruzioni in pietra caratteristiche, “a tholos” rifugi dei pastori. Inoltre è percorso da una vasta rete di sentieri individuali e segnalati, attraverso i quali è possibile ammirare la natura incontaminata del territorio altomolisano. Sulla strada che da Capracotta porta a Pescopennataro, si incontra il Giardino della Flora Appenninica, orto botanico di alta quota che raccoglie notevoli specie floreali e arboree dell’Italia centro-meridionale.

Oltre alla ‘Pezzata’, la festa della Madonna di Loreto è la più importante per gli abitanti di Capracotta e si celebra, per tradizione, ogni tre anni  (7-8-9 settembre). Nell’ambito dei festeggiamenti è suggestiva la “sfilata dei cavalli” che, riccamente decorati con tessuti pregiati e finemente addobbati, scortano il passaggio della statua della Madonna di Loreto, venerata per le vie del paese.

Historical notes


With its 1421 meters above sea level, is one of the highest Apennine (the highest point is the summit of Mount Field mt 1730) and the village is open wide panoramic views of the Majella and Mainarde. Its history is ancient: in addition to the findings that prove the presence of prehistoric man, in particular the "Tabula Osca" (a bronze plate with an inscription in Oscan currently on display at the British Museum in London) attaches to the territory of Capracotta Samnite civilization, as well as the remains of belts in polygonal Monte Cavallerizzo (mt 1524) and Mount St. Nicholas (mt 1517).
Capracotta is important for its climate and winter sports that are practiced. His Ski Club was founded in 1914 and has two major ski resorts: one for skiing in Monte Capraro: one for the cross-country ski resort Prato Gentile. Thanks to its location, in winter it is common to run into a blizzard. Easily you can find in the streets and squares where the snowpack can exceed two meters, as well as in summer you can enjoy the cool climate in both the village and in surrounding areas. The village consists of typical stone houses and on top of a long flight of steps is the parish church of Mary of the Assumption, the eighteenth century. The facade is made of stone, is two orders of the interior with three naves: the font is fine with precious carvings, the altar in the nave, the inlaid marble balustrade, the organ of 700 and an imposing bell tower. Santa Maria di Loreto, 1 km from the town, houses a group of sculptures of Giacomo Colombo.

Source of the local economy has been for centuries the sheep and it is related to the festival which is held the first Sunday of August in Prato Gentile, called "dappled", a recipe related to sheep meat sheep. They are still very popular dairy products, fruit of a long history and traditional crafts. Its territory, especially to the district spots, is dotted with buildings of stone features, "tholos" huts of shepherds. On the road that leads to Capracotta Pescopennataro, you'll find the Garden of Flora Apennine high altitude botanical garden that collects large species of flowers and trees of central-southern.
In addition to the 'Spotted', the feast of Our Lady of Loreto is the most important for the inhabitants of Capracotta and is celebrated traditionally, every three years (September 7-8-9). As part of the celebrations is the charming "parade of horses", which is richly decorated with fine fabrics and finely decorated, accompanying the passage of the statue of Our Lady of Loreto, venerated in the streets of the country.
