Le terre molisane sono tra le piu’ nobili del nostro Paese:  oltre ai suoi paradisi enograstonomici, la Regione è stata fertile anche nell’essere madre di tante figure che hanno dato lustro all’arte, allo spettacolo ed al cinema. Anche quelle non di primissimo piano hanno contribuito alla fama di questo circondario: e Salvatore Baccaro ne fa certamente parte.

La sua curiosa storia merita di essere brevemente narrata: originario di Roccamandolfi ( Is),  nasce nel 1944 e si trasferisce ben presto a Roma per esercitare il mestiere di fioraio presso gli stabilimenti cinematografici De Paolis. E qui esplode la piu’ grande contraddizione ( e fortuna) della sua vita:  la deformità del suo aspetto, nonchè un pronunciato prognatismo, sarebbero di certo un ostacolo ad un suo ingresso nel mondo dello spettacolo: men che meno in quello del cinema, da sempre tempio del bello e non certo aduso ad accogliere colui che a suo tempo fu definito “l’uomo più brutto del mondo”.

Eppure, fu proprio questa sua caratteristica fisica, unita ad una altrettanto inattesa bonomia e gentilezza d’animo, a spalancargli le porte del mondo della celluloide.

Diretto da alcuni tra i più grandi registi dell’epoca quali Tinto Brass ed addirittura Dario Argento ( una coincidenza?..), ebbe modo di mettere in mostra una certa capacità recitativa che nemmeno la sua evidente mancanza di estetica seppe celare. Fornì buone prove interpretative in film di vario genere, pur senza assurgere mai alla gloria: ma tuttavia seppe affermarsi nei sapienti ruoli di caratterista che la sua fisionomia doveva evidentemente attribuirgli.

Tra le pellicole in cui si nota la sua partecipazione, sono da rimarcare LE 5 GIORNATE di Dario Argento, che lo volle autore di un cameo persino nel suo Profondo Rosso del 1975, in cui interpreta un fruttivendolo. Anche Tinto Brass, come detto,  lo scritturò in un ruolo di contorno nel suo Salon Kitty, accanto ad attori del calibro di Helmut Berger, Stefano Satta Flores ed Ingrid Thulin e che tanto scalpore all’epoca suscitò per i suoi contenuti erotici.

Ma la sua immagine, unita anche ad una spiccata autoironia, non poteva che calzargli a pennello nell’interpretazione di personaggi comici ed ilari: ed eccolo allora, ad esempio, al fianco di Pippo Franco nel film IL TIFOSO, L’ARBITRO, IL CALCIATORE a dar vita ad una serie di innumerevoli macchiette, per poi raggiungere il clou della sua carriera accanto ad un altro “bello” dell’epoca quale Alvaro Vitali ( che al suo fianco si diceva essere al confronto Brad Pitt), per seguirlo in tutte le sue interpretazioni della saga del famigerato Pierino, nei cui cast ( ancora una contraddizione) si esibivano le più belle attrici giovani dell’epoca quale ad esempio la splendida Michela Miti.

Al termine di queste pellicole, la sua carriera volse rapidamente al termine, anche a causa del peggiorare delle sue condizioni di salute: per quindi uscire di scena definitivamente, quasi dimenticato da tutti.

Infatti, fu solo dopo diversi anni che si venne a sapere della sua scomparsa: avvenuta a soli 40 anni nel 1984 a Novara a seguito delle complicazioni dovute ad un intervento cui si era sottoposto, nonché all’acromegalia che ormai lo affliggeva dolorosamente.

Lascia certo il ricordo di una persona che, pur apparentemente ispida e dura, era invece molto alla mano e totalmente affidabile sul set: quello stesso set” per trovarsi sul quale in tanti avrebbero pagato pur di essere al suo fianco a recitare”.

SALVATORE BACCARO -  THE UGLY DUCKLING THAT TURNS SWAN ON THE SCREEN  


The  Molise lands are among the most 'noble of our country: in addition to its havens enograstonomici, the region has been fertile in being the mother of so many figures that have brought success to art, the show and the movies.
Even those not of the first order have contributed to the fame of this district: Salvatore Baccaro and it is certainly part.
Its curious history deserves to be briefly narrated: original Roccamandolfi (Is), was born in 1944 and soon moved to Rome to exercise the profession of florist at the film studios De Paolis.
And here it explodes the most 'great contradiction (and luck) of his life: the deformity of its appearance, as well as a pronounced undershot, would certainly an obstacle to its entry into the entertainment world: certainly not in the cinema, from Always temple of beauty and certainly not accustomed to welcome the one who at the time was called "the ugliest man in the world".
Yet it was precisely this physical characteristic, combined with an equally unexpected good humor and kindness of heart, to throw open the doors of the world of celluloid.
Directed by some of the greatest directors of the time such as Tinto Brass and even Dario Argento (coincidence? ..), He was able to showcase some acting ability that not even his obvious lack of aesthetics was able to conceal.
It provided good evidence of interpretation in films of various kinds, without ever rise to glory: but nevertheless was able establish itself in the role of skilled character actor that his appearance had evidently attribute.
Among the films in which he noted his participation, they are to emphasize THE 5 DAYS Dario Argento, who wanted even authored a cameo in his Deep Red 1975, in which he played a greengrocer.
Even Tinto Brass, as mentioned, cast him in a role of contour in his Salon Kitty, alongside the likes of Helmut Berger, Stefano Satta Flores and Ingrid Thulin and that caused such a stir at the time for its erotic content.
But its image, united also with a strong irony, could calzargli brush interpretation of comic characters and hilarious: and there he is then, for example, alongside Pippo Franco in the film THE FAN, THE REFEREE, THE PLAYER to create a series of countless caricatures, before reaching the highlight of his career alongside another "beautiful" era which Alvaro Vitali (who was said to be at his side compared to Brad Pitt), to follow him in all His interpretations of the saga of the infamous Peter, in which cast (even contradictory) were performing the most beautiful young actresses of the time such as the wonderful Michela Miti.
After these films, his career turned quickly at the end, also because of the worsening of his health: for then bow out for good, almost forgotten.
In fact, it was only after several years that she learned of his death: occurred just 40 years in 1984 in Novara as a result of complications from surgery he had undergone, and acromegaly that now afflicted him sorely.
Leave some the memory of a person who, while seemingly tough and wiry, was instead very approachable and totally reliable on the set: the same set "to be on what many would have paid anything to be at his side to play."
